“Changemaker Kid” Newspaper Project
As a way to practice the art and science of writing, Laura Marble’s elementary students worked with community partner and journalist, Shannon Conner. Shannon taught the children the basics of interviewing people and writing newspaper stories. She did one-on-one editing with the students and also led a field trip to a local printing press where students could see real-world news in the making.
Their final product, a newspaper named “Changemaker Kid,” described volunteer opportunities in Pima County for children.
"If you ever had any doubt about wanting to help people..., you should do it anyway."
"I wanted to hold out to [my students] a really appealing way of getting published, so as to propel their writing skills forward. I also wanted them to grow in their understanding of themselves as potential changemakers."
